Overview
SS-31, known by its nonproprietary name elamipretide, is a synthetic tetrapeptide from the Szeto-Schiller family of peptides that concentrate at the inner mitochondrial membrane. Dmt in its sequence is 2′,6′-dimethyltyrosine.
The Szeto-Schiller peptides are named for Hazel Szeto and Peter Schiller, who designed them around an alternating aromatic-cationic motif. SS-31 binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost only in the inner mitochondrial membrane, which is why it concentrates there rather than in the cytoplasm.
